Gifoscopes are inspired by the praxinoscope, an optical toy created by Émile Reynaud and presented at the universal exhibition of Paris in 1878.

La Camaraderie and the RIDM (Montreal International Documentary Festival) revisit this optical principle and installs it in the public space to raise awareness among strollers about images in motion and cinema.

Visitors are invited to make Gifoscopes turn to animate illustrations; the simple principle is fascinating and the eye is captivated by the sequence taking place on the mirrors. Visitors can also create their own series of animated images by taking part in workshops organized by the RIDM.

Each sequence consists of 12 images that function on a loop. The animations that the public made are impressively creative.
